Goa's offshore casinos running without mandatory NOCs, by Greg Tingle
Three offshore casinos, including India's biggest one, have been operating on the Mandovi river in Goa without a mandatory no objection certificate (NOC) for nearly two years, a minister said Wednesday.
Minister for Ports Nilkanth Halarnkar told the Goa legislative assembly that the three casino vessels were operating on expired NOCs.
'Action will be taken against these casino operators if they do not provide the required NOCs by April,' Halarnkar assured the assembly after the opposition grilled the minister for allowing the casinos to operate illegally.
The casinos with expired NOCs are M.V. Casino Royale, M.V. San Domino and M.V. Boa Sorte. NOCs of the first two expired in 2009.
Casino Royale is India's largest casino vessel. It has five operational decks with over 12,000 sq ft of gaming area, and has 50 gaming tables and 30 slot machines.
Even ruling bench legislators took the minister to task over the failure to check contamination of the Mandovi river due to sewage discharged by the seven casino vessels anchored on it.
"Fish are vanishing from the Mandovi river because of contamination of its waters following illegal sewage discharge from the casino vessels. The Arabian sea is pushing the sewage inwards into the river, further contaminating it," Congress legislator Dayanand Narvekar told the assembly.
Speaker Pratapsingh Rane has asked the state environment ministry to probe into the contamination issue.

Australian Casino Canberra Close To Getting Pokies At Last, by Greg Tingle - 18th March 2011
G'day punters, casino and gambling millionaires and billionaires, legal eagles, government officials...one and all. Australia's capital, Canberra, may be getting slots in its casino sooner rather than latter, tipped to win its 16 year battle for the 'bandits'. We also learn that the offline gambling world continues to ramp up its business dealings with the online gaming sector. We've also got the connection between NRL clubs and pokies, and lots more.. Media Man and Gambling911 take you on another voyage of discovery down under to Australia...
Casino Canberra In Nations Capital Tipped To Get Pokies; Punters Rejoice After 18 Years...
Punters in Canberra may not have to wait much longer before they can play the likes of Cleopatra, Black Rhino, Where's The Gold, Gone Fishing, Top Gun, Monopoly, Outback Jack and the rest of their pokie friends, some of which are found via online portals like Media Man International and Casino News Media.
Casino Canberra have been fighting for pokies for 16-years to operate the 'one armed bandits' out of its Glebe Park gambling den. ACT Labor Party insiders have leaked that former treasurer Ted Quinlan will recommend in his considerable review of the region's revenue base that the casino be allowed to operate machines in the venue. The casino has been lobbying to have pokies since 1995, when it says the opening of 'Sin City' Sydney's Star City Casino whacked them in the guts. Last year it raised the stakes by offering the ACT Government a whopping $10 million one-off payment simply to be allowed to operate the machines. To date the Government has not budged and refused flat out to permit any departure from Canberra's "not-for-profit" business model of distribution of machines. The ACT Labor Party snatched in excess of $600,000 in revenue from its Labor Club pokies operation last year, according to returns from the ACT Electoral Commission. Gaming Minister Andrew Barr has refused to discuss the matter as we go to print. Mr Quinlan has been commissioned to conduct a "root-and-branch review" of the entire ACT tax system, including gambling revenues, and it's understood he told party colleagues that he was preparing to recommend that the casino be granted its long time wish for 200 machines. It's believed that Quinlan noted that the Productivity Commission observed last year, "the prohibition on Canberra casino's operation of gaming machines is difficult to justify". Quinlan refused to confirm or deny the reports as we approach print. "I won't enter into the discussion". Casino Canberra marketing manager Peter Cursley said a recommendation from the Quinlan Review for pokies at the casino would be acknowledging the weight of evidence. "There's been a number of government-commissioned reports," he said. "All those reports have all either suggested that there should be machines in the casino or stated that there would be no harm done by machines in the casino." The casino has long argued pokies would contribute 30% in gross gaming revenue tax, delivering an annual revenue stream of about $4 million to the ACT Government. Canberra punters have been patiently waiting over a decade to play classic slots like Cleopatra, Monopoly and Wheel Of Fortune in their home state of Canberra and insiders are tipping the casino may just grant them their wish within the next few months. Time will tell if it would be a true win - win - win, but Casino Canberra would surly win. Canberra based players continue to play online poker machines in the meantime or travel to Melbourne's Crown or Sydney's Star City...of course in search of the elusive jackpots.
NRL Clubs Look To Make Up For Shotfall; Result Of Proposed Pokie Law Changes...
The National Rugby League clubs in 'Sin City' Sydney have a list of requests (getting closer to demands we hear) to offset the effect on their takings, should the Aussie government implement proposals like 'smart cards' onto 'one armed bandits' (slots aka pokies). The licensed clubs which are behind the footy clubs estimate the dip in revenue and cost of implementing the changes in attempt to reduce problem gambling will force them to cease many community support initiatives, like nurturing up and coming junior players, helping out aged care, schools and the like. It's the flow on effect. Should the federal government keep at these gaming reforms, clubs reckon a couple of things will assist them on the bean counter side of things...
The election of a Coalition government in NSW
A billion-dollar broadcasting deal for rugby league
A High Court decision upholding a turnover tax on wagering
The NSW state election will be on March 26 and Labor is set to go down for the count in spectacular fashion. The Coalition (Liberals and Nationals) have inked a memorandum of understanding with Sydney's whale size licensed clubs giving them tax relief on pokies, snatching St George Leagues Club (The Dragons) $800,000. Clubs with larger gambling revenue (Penrith Panthers and Canterbury Bulldogs), will also get more of the action. St George's annual contribution to football is $3 million: $2.7 million is put aside to the NRL team and $300,000 to the club's junior representative teams. Media deals can also be a big part of the financial future of clubs. The clubs are seeking a billion-dollar TV rights deal. This would effectively raise the NRL's revenue from broadcasting by a massive 50%, and would be expected to double the NRL's annual grant to its 16 clubs, currently at $3.5 million. We will have to wait until the conclusion of the end of next season to see what happens with the TV contract. Free-to-air rights holder, Network Nine, has committed to pay more for the content, while Network Ten and Channel Seven have advised they are in the running to make bids to attempt to snatch the TV rights offerings. Tax is always a big thing for business. A 1.5 per cent turnover tax on wagering, is tipped to increase NRL revenue by as much as $20 mill. Sweet money if you can get it. This would facilitate the NRL to grab higher product fees, further increase annual club grants and thus reduce clubs' dependence on 'one armed bandits'. The news is not all good for the clubs. Friday's High Court decision granting Northern Territory corporate bookmakers and Betfair leave to appeal against a Federal Court decision upholding the turnover tax may play on the minds of the Sydney NRL club powers that be. It does't mean the High Court will reverse the Federal Court decision that gives legitimacy to product fees being based on the existing gross profit model, however NRL clubs would have preferred the High Court did not grant leave to appeal. The federal government's agenda to address problem gambling is set out in a memorandum to the presidents of licensed clubs on March 3 we understand. The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, favours a pre-commitment scheme where "We use technology to give people a tool, at the beginning of a gambling session, to think about how much they want to spend, set limits and stick to them. Under the model recommended by the Productivity Commission, players can set the limit as high or low as they like and players could choose no limit at all if they prefer." In a letter to the minister on March 9, the general manager of St George Leagues Club, Danny Robinson, set out his board's concerns. "This club cannot afford to spend the estimated costs of $6 million on the required technology to implement such a system. The expected reduction in revenue for this club would be $14 million per year which, together with the costs associated with the implementation of mandatory pre-commitment, would cause this club to close. Closure of this famous club would result in the loss of jobs for hundreds of workers and the loss of facilities enjoyed by over 30,000 members. The club's current contribution of over $4 million per year for sport and sporting facilities would be lost to the community … The club's annual contribution of $300,000 to local hospitals and children with special needs would also be lost." Robinson stages the flow on effects would occur without guarantee a pokie pre-commitment system would work. The system hasn't worked well in other countries with many experts, private and government saying the system is a failure, and a waste of time and money. Gamblers will continue to gamble, especially problem gamblers, with lots of loop holes - fake ID, makes cards, club hopping, removing fingerprints and all manner of other cleaver tactics, in attempt to outsmart 'Big Brother'.

Adelaide Casino Switches Off Outdoor Pokies...
The Adelaide Casino has turned off poker machines which are installed in its outdoor smoking area, due to some people power pressure. The gaming section was opened last week and has 20 outside poker machines enabling people to gamble while smoking. Some MPs expressed concerns that casino operator SkyCity was trying to exploit a loophole in South Australia's smoking laws, pointing out pubs could not install outdoor pokies. SA Premier Mike Rann said the move was not a good look for the Adelaide Casino. "What they've done looks to most people like trying to get round the rules," he said. "Now if it's legal and there's a loophole then we should look at closing that loophole. "I would like to see the casino do the right thing and I think at the moment what they've done is the wrong thing." SA Gambling Minister Bernard Finnigan has asked gambling control authorities to prepare a report for him. "I've asked the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner for a full report on the matter as to what the current regulations are," he said. "We're certainly committed to making sure that we have smoke-free gambling areas in the casino and elsewhere." Independent Senator Nick Xenophon said SkyCity Casino was exploiting a loophole in legislation by putting machines outside. "We know from the research there's a clear link between gambling and smoking, particularly with poker machines," he said. "Now it can continue, people playing, because they don't go out to get a cigarette break. "It clearly is a breach of the spirit of the legislation. It's a loophole and the Government needs to act now." Independent MLC John Darley also said he would demand the Government act. In a statement, casino general manager David Christian said authorities were notified last December the casino would be putting machines in the area, which was licenced for gambling decades ago.
Former Legal Eagles Ordered To Pay $637k For Trust Breach...
An ex Melbourne lawyer who stole from clients to pay for a gambling addiction, has been ordered to pay $637,000 to the Legal Services Board for breach of trust. Gabriel Werden lost his right to practice law and was sentenced to almost six years in prison in 2006. He was convicted of a string of theft charges and obtaining financial advantage by deception, after admitting he stole $1.1 million from nine clients. Werden claimed he was being threatened by loan sharks, who were helping to pay for his gambling addiction at Crown Casino. The Victorian Supreme Court this morning ordered Werden to pay the Legal Services Board $637,000 for breach of trust.

Casino News Media: Merger Between bwin and PartyGaming Planned to Complete on 31 March 2011
March 15, 2011 - Merger Plan Requirements Now Met in Austria
Following the almost unanimous approval of the merger at the extraordinary general meetings of both bwin Interactive Entertainment AG (bwin) and PartyGaming Plc.
(PartyGaming) on 28 January 2011, the proposed merger was formally entered into the companies' register by the Vienna Commercial Court on 15 March 2011. Subject to the formal approval from the supreme court in Gibraltar, the merger is expected to complete on 31 March 2011.
Share trading on the stock exchange
bwin shares (ISIN AT0000767553) will cease trading on the Vienna Stock Exchange at close of business on 25 March 2011. For administrative reasons, trading in bwin shares on the Vienna Stock Exchange must be suspended for three days prior to completion and also on the day of completion itself (31 March 2011). On 1 April 2011, existing bwin shareholders will receive 12.23 bwin.party depositary interests (ISIN GI000A0MV757) for each bwin share free of charge. These depository interests can then be traded on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BPTY.L.
The exchange ratio of 12.23 bwin.party depositary interests for each bwin share will result in so-called 'fractional entitlements', rights to fractions of bwin.party depositary interests that cannot be traded on the London Stock Exchange. In accordance with the terms of the merger, these entitlements will be disposed of, and the proceeds of sale credited to the original beneficiaries (former bwin shareholders) in a process that may take up to two weeks. The disposal of fractional entitlements is also without cost to bwin shareholders.
Anti-trust approvals received
Following the approval of the merger in Germany by the Federal Cartel Office and in Austria by the Federal Competition Authority, bwin has now also received anti-trust approval from the relevant authorities in Romania.
Dividend
The new bwin.party depositary interests will carry a dividend entitlement with effect from 1 January 2010. The company's dividend policy will be determined by the new board of bwin.party digital entertainment plc over the next few months.
Media Man, Casino News Media and Global Gaming Directory do have a b2b relationship with PartyGaming, as they do with dozens of other companies in the gaming, igaming, media and entertainment industry.

Crown Casino Citizen Paparazzi Shifts Into Top Gear, by Greg Tingle - 14th March 2011
G'day punters, gambling and casino millionaires and billionaires, photogs and rev heads. Rev heads. WTF? An amateur photographer snapped his not so smartphone - iphone at Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson at a Crown Casino restaurant Saturday with alarming results, bringing minds back to Russell Crowe's and Naomi Campbell's bad phone days.
Media Man and Gambling911 get you on pole position with this juiced up report...
Amateur Photographer Puts Jeremy Clarkson's Anger Into Top Gear At Crown Casino...
Folks, its been a while since we had a bit of odd news from Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, but wait no longer.
Readers will recall the 'Ferrari Thief Man', the 'Casino Battle Royal' and 'Grease Trap Man', but now we have 'Crown's Amateur Pap Man Angers Clarkson Into Top Gear'.
Melbourne racing car enthusiast Michael Garner claims the British TV star shirt-fronted him during a heated Crown Casino restaurant stand-off on Saturday night.
Clarkson's engine overheated when Garner used his smartphone to take some pictures of the star having a bite at a Melbourne restaurant located in James Packer's Crown Casino.
The otherwise popular, but ever controversial Clarkson was dining with colleagues including co-star James May and new Top Gear Australia host Shane 'Kenny' Jacobson at Crown's Guiseppe Arnaldo & Sons.
Super fan Garner, sitting nearby, advised he took one happy snap, which didn't work, and then snapped a second.
"We weren't intrusive. I didn't walk up to him. He was 8ft away, he wasn't close by," Garner told 3AW yesterday.
"He's got out of his seat, stormed over and shirt-fronted me."
A heated up Clarkson snatched the iphone and threw it to a colleague and Garner said he thought the TV star might king hit him.
"In some ways, yes, I thought it could be on," he said.
Jacobson stepped in to calm the situation, apologising to Garner and saying that Clarkson had had a bad day.
"(Clarkson) didn't apologise at all, which I thought was pretty unfair," Garner said.
A Top Gear spokeswoman said the crew had been having a private dinner and their privacy was invaded, but she said the situation had been amicably resolved.
It's understood that Clarkson, Jacobsen nor Garner gambled on the evening in question.
Readers may remember other motorsport and rev head matters tied into casinos such as the 'Crown Casino Ferrari Theif', PartyGaming's 'Drive The Dream' promotion and PKR Poker's Porsche promotion from a few years back. Roughly a year ago Richard Branson's Virgin Racing picked up Full Tilt Poker as a sponsor, but since that time Full Tilt has been hit with a bush tucker bag of bad publicity including poker bot scandals and affiliates across the globe saying they are owned large sums of money. Over a year ago PartyGaming's PartyPoker.com sponsored a number of F1 racing starts with their PartyPoker brand including Jaime Alguersuari and Giancarlo Fisichella.
A few weeks ago Packer's Crown Casino sponsored embattled NRL team, The Melbourne Storm, and you can bet that Crown nor The Storm are looking for any more trouble. Just last week AFL living legend Brendan "Punter" Fevola was ejected by Crown when he was found to be playing poker by himself!
Crown Casino will once again play host to the annual TV Week Logie Awards on Sunday 1st May 2011. The 'Underbelly' show, TV movies and some actors in in the running for a number of awards, but last year got a 'golden donut' - nothing, so don't get too excited. On logies night security will be at an all time high, but the world awaits to see if we get another Twitter-Gate, or more dramas with unwanted and unwelcome photo opportunities, along with the often unfunny jokes.
It's understood Australian paparazzi Jamie Fawcett has been spotted at Crown Casino a number of times in the past few months. It was Fawcett who stalked out Australian cricket legend and celebrity businessman, Shane Warne, when he was 'hanging and banging' with UK babe Liz 'Hurley' Burley, who he lured down under to Australia after a well publicized kiss (pash) a few months ago. Fawcett has gone on record many times that his style of photography is about 'The Money Shot', but one can be forgiven for confusing the styles of photography money shots between himself and the Sydney based Eva Rinaldi, who hasn't photographed poker or casino stars yet, but is in line for the Royal's Price William. She was also recently spotted at the Future Music Festival where the Mazda2 Flamingo stage had a casino theme even sporting a likeness from the Golden Nugget casino in Las Vegas.
Crown Limited management and staff take the safety and happiness of patrons and investors seriously, and that's no joke.

PartyGaming News: PartyPoker Launches Win Tonight Promotion
Profiles
PartyGaming PartyPoker.com PartyCasino.com World Poker Tour Casino Poker Slots Games Media Man
Samsung 3D televisions, Apple iPads, and Monster Beats headphones are just a few of the prizes up for grabs as part of PartyPoker’s Win Tonight promotion, which runs until March 28th. The series of daily freerolls is open to new players only.
The PartyPoker Win Tonight promotion began back on February 15th and gives players an extra incentive to sign up for the longstanding room fronted by Mike Sexton, Kara Scott, and the always boisterous Tony G. There are 42 freerolls that will be held in total – one each day until March 28th.
Between Monday and Saturday, the prizes that will be given away include a 16 GB iPad and cover, Canon EOS 1000D with tripod and bag, PSP Go and Monster Beats headphones, 320 GB PS3 Slim, PS3 Move Pack and charging kit, FIFA 11 and Call of Duty Black Ops games, 64 GB iPod Touch and docking speakers, and a Sony Vaio VPC that comes complete with a 16 GB flash drive. Swank.
On Sundays, PartyPoker is kicking the prize package up to a brand new 40-inch Samsung 3D television. To boot, you’ll also get a Blu-ray player and a set of 3D glasses for your viewing pleasure. If you’ve never seen a 3D television before, you should. Video games, movies, and more pop out of the screen at you like never before and, with 40 inches of screen space, you’ll feel like you’re in the middle of Pandora.
The freerolls are held at 20:00 CET nightly and are only open to new players. To qualify, just make your first deposit between February 15th and the end of the day on March 27th. Then, enter as many freerolls as you can stomach. If you want to play every single day of the week, go for it. If you’d rather just enter on Sundays when the 3D television is up for grabs, do that instead.
If you make the final table of a Win Tonight freeroll, but don’t capture the top prize, you’ll still walk away with cash in tow. The top 10 players will finish in the money, with second place banking $30, third place scoring $20, fourth place earning $13, and fifth place earning $11. The sixth through tenth place finishers will collect between $3 and $8. The winners can also opt for a cash alternative, although the amount is up to PartyPoker to decide.
By the way, if you head to Best Buy’s website and search for a 40-inch Samsung 3D television, the asking price is $1,600, so there is plenty of value for players in the site’s Win Tonight promotion.
While you’re busy winning the hottest electronic items on PartyPoker, mark your calendar for March 6th, which will mark next month’s running of the Monthly Million. The $640 buy-in contest runs on the first Sunday of every month and features a solid mix of regulars and satellite qualifiers.
Speaking of satellites, there are plenty to choose from for the Monthly Million, including a $1 Million Mega Friday Satellite that sends at least 20 players to the big dance and costs $55. On Saturdays, look for $35 qualifiers that send at least 15 lucky PartyPoker players to the Monthly Million. Real money satellites start as low as a buck. Daily points qualifiers and country-specific freerolls also exist, so check out PartyPoker for full details. (Credit: Poker News Daily)

Casino News Media: Malta as an i-Gaming hub is world class, by Greg Tingle - February 2011
Malta is one of the world's foremost international hubs that regulate remote gaming effectively and responsibly, perhaps only second to Gibraltar. The beautiful island has become a classic example of how i-Gaming should and can be regulated. Its professional approach to remote gaming regulation is well known, hence the country has become a jurisdiction of choice for the industry. The island is a microcosm of Europe and as such is place to test concepts and the like, before pushing them to the masses. This approach works well for the ICT sector.
Malta currently has in excess of 300 active licensees.
The i-Gaming industry is encouraged by government initiative and state-of-the-art telecoms infrastructure, which the island is maintains its status as one of the most progressive environments in the world for IT, remote gaming and e-Business activities. Investment in ICT is especially strong.
For a real word example of an ICT development working well look up SmartCity. Born from Dubai Internet City, Tecom Investments is investing US$300 million in an ICT hub. This reaffirms the island’s initiative to become the European outpost for global ICT or i-Gaming companies that want to establish a presence in Europe. This project compliments with Malta’s aspirations in the ITC sector given that Microsoft, Cisco and Oracle have all established a significant presence on the island.
They aim to soon establish research and development testing ground for ICT related companies. Another major advantage of choosing Malta is secure and reliable links to the Internet for passing huge packets of data and traffic. Vodafone Malta took a strategic decision in 2003 to have its own submarine data cable between Malta and Sicily. Commissioned in 2004, this doubled the number of international data links connecting Malta to the rest of the world. Data traffic at the start of i-Gaming community in 2001 was rather small - a few tens of megabits - but has surged since then. 3 operators are competing to provide quality and reliable bandwidth via a submarine cable to the Italian mainland. In terms of technology, the fibre-optic submarine data cable remains an important link between Malta and the rest of the world, an extremely sensitive link without which the i-gaming industry would not exist in Malta. But another important ingredient for the island’s success is regulation. The industry is strictly regulated by an efficient team at the Malta Lotteries and Gaming headed by Rueben Portanier, a veteran in the ICT and i-Gaming sector. The regulation is fair but strictly enforced to ensure total protection to players while offering a competitive gaming and corporate tax structure.
2009 Allocation of licensees...
But the industry is facing challenges in cross-border issues particularly as other EU countries wish to restrict the provision of gaming services to their citizens. Thus Malta welcomes any rationalization of the online gaming sector that is generating a generous contribution to its GDP. But as always, our continued success to be the leading hub in Europe is not guaranteed and we have seen many EU members gearing up to compete and of course enacting restrictions to protect their own gambling state monopolies. Typically, we note how various Members of Parliament stressed that online gambling operators must comply with the gambling legislation of the member state in which they provide their services and in which the consumer resides. In their opinion, most online gambling licence holders operate from favourable tax jurisdictions and respect ‘country of origin’ rules regarding the provision of services.
Under the thinly veiled guise of protecting consumers, we note that gambling activities have traditionally been strictly regulated at national level. Again, it is customary to cite the rationale of such restrictions as the duty of each state to protect consumers against addiction, fraud, money laundering and fixed games. Of course these barrages of restrictions go against the spirit and law of free movement of services in the unified market. This led to a number of European Court of Justice rulings on the issue and several Commission infringement procedures posted against member states to verify whether national measures limiting the cross-border supply of online gambling services are compatible with Article 49 of the EC Treaty, which guarantees the free movement of services.
The European Commission “does not exclude” alternative solutions to individual infringement procedures against member states on gambling, Last year, internal Market Commissioner Michel Barnier, addressing a European Parliament plenary debate in Strasbourg, revealed his future approach to the topic during his term. Thus it seems that some clarification is very much overdue in this sensitive sector where member states naturally protect their interests by blocking players from gambling on foreign unlicensed websites. There are currently nine Commission infringement procedures targeting cross-border betting on sports events online with countries, including Germany, Hungary, France, Belgium, Sweden, Italy and The Netherlands. In this context, Barnier said, “I want to launch a constructive dialogue [on gambling] with the Parliament and member states and concerned stakeholders.” He launched a EU Green Paper that would act as a first step forward. The most interesting question in the Green Paper is whether online gaming market is more tightly regulated or liberalized in the different EU member states. The paper will cover recent cases in the European Court of Justice due to the fact that in the past a series of infringement procedures were opened against member states’ gaming legislation for not complying with the freedom to provide services of the EU Treaty.
The legal landscape for online gambling aka igaming is dynamic to say the least, and prospective changes are altering the shape of the pan-European market. Britain, for instance, could move from a highly liberalised and commercial licensing system to a more restrictive territory based system. According to a British government policy paper, which, if enacted, proposes that it would be a criminal offence to provide online gambling services to British residents and to advertise online gambling in the UK without a licence issued by the Gambling Commission. If the final version of the proposal is implemented and is tested to be compliant with EU law, then all operators licensed in EEA member states and Gibraltar, as well as licensees based in the white list territories, will have to apply for an additional operating licence in the UK. Likewise, Ireland’s Prime Minister Brian Cowen announced that the Irish government wants to introduce legislation that would require offshore gaming companies to obtain licences in order to operate in the Irish online market. In Belgium, one expects significant changes to existing regulation on betting and gaming which in some parts are considered incompatible with EU law as licences are only issued to existing operators. However, under the requirements it seems next to impossible, for a foreign EU operator to obtain an online licence in Belgium.
In The Netherlands online gambling is legal, but the government has not yet issued any licences for online poker, online bingo and online casinos. When that may change is anyone's guess, but governments around the world are keen to get their slice of revenue, as the secret is out that igaming is one of the world's most lucrative and profitable sectors.
Malta as an EU member has a number of key strengths that have enabled it to grow as a hub for the iGaming industry it is today. The future is looking fantastic, and its tipped to only get better, as the world watches Malta to see how it's done.

Virgin Hotels 'at least two years away' - 1st February 2011
Sir Richard Branson has said that his much-anticipated new hotel brand Virgin Hotels is still two years away from launching.
According to reports in US media, he told the American Lodging and Investment Summit that finding sites for the new hotel chain wasn't proving easy, although he did confirm a few places where travelers will be able to enjoy Virgin's almost-legendary hospitality.
San Diego and Washington DC are likely candidates, and Branson also announced that one of the the first sites will be in New Mexico, overlooking the spaceport which will send his Virgin Galactic tourist flights into space.
He also told conference attendees that each hotel will be different, saying that putting a Virgin stamp on the hotels wasn't enough and that the goal was to be the "funnest" hotel for guests to go to.
Fans of the outlandish British billionaire who are disappointed by the wait can take solace in exciting new hotels from America's favorite businessman Donald Trump, scheduled for the not-too-distant future.
The luxury hotel brand is set to open its first properties outside of the US in the coming months - the Trump Ocean Club Panama and the Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto are both expected in the spring.
The hotels, which will be added to the five-star portfolio of properties in New York, Las Vegas and Chicago, are built to the exacting standards of Donald and his daughter Ivanka and are both record breakers - the Panama property is the tallest and largest building in Latin America and the Toronto hotel the tallest residential building in Canada.

Gibraltar Raises Taxes on Online Gambling Companies

The British territory of Gibraltar has announced that it will be drastically inflating its taxes on all online gambling firms starting in January, a decision that could prove costly for several online poker sites. Online gambling companies are currently paying just a 1% tax in Gibraltar, with a ceiling of £425,000, but starting next month, they’ll be forced into the same 10% tax rate as other Gibraltar businesses pay.
Gibraltar has been an ideal location for many online gambling sites due to the low tax rate and has become something of an “online gambling capital” as a result. Poker rooms such as PartyPoker and 888poker currently hold their headquarters in the territory and the online bookmakers Ladbrokes and William Hill made the move to Gibraltar in 2009 – a decision that was expected to cost the Treasury of the United Kingdom about £12 million per year.
Gibraltar’s first minister, Peter Caruana, said the tax increase has been called for by Gibraltar government’s decision to conform to European law. "To comply with EU law, we must phase out the tax exempt company in 2010," Caruana said. "However, in order to sustain our successful economic model, we must retain a commitment to a very competitive corporate tax model."
PartyGaming, which owns and operates PartyPoker from Gibraltar, recently released details concerning its long-awaited merger with online gambling giant bwin. PartyGaming said in a statement that it would keep its headquarters in Gibraltar while bwin continues to operate in Austria. Whether the news of the tax increase changes those plans remains to be seen. "We’ve known about this for some time and we’ve factored it in," said PartyGaming spokesman John Shepherd. "The tax is still going to be very low."
According to a report in The Guardian, while online companies will now pay the standard 10% tax rate paid by other businesses, they will still not be subjected to any Value Added Tax (VAT), meaning that Gibraltar will remain an attractive setting for gambling companies. VAT is a consumption tax only on the "value added" to a product, material or service – similar to the state sales tax that most U.S. residents pay.
Many experts seem confident that the tax increase won’t cause companies like PartyGaming to flee to other locations. Victor Chandler, Chairman of independent bookmaker Victor Chandler International, expressed his assurance in an interview with regional newspaper El Pais: "Nobody will leave, although we’ll all complain about the tax going up." Chandler began his U.K.-based company in 1946 that does much of its business online, including sports betting, casino games, and poker.
The decision will likely add up to big things for Gibraltar in the near future. Under the current 1% tax rate, Gibraltar collected £10.5 million in revenue from online gambling taxes in 2009. So long as online gambling firms decide to stay put, the government can expect to see that number magnify in the coming years.
Online gambling has proven to be an extremely important source of revenue for Gibraltar and it is believed that 2,000 people currently work in the sector, which is around 12% of the island’s workforce. The industry has also helped to protect the local economy against neighboring Spain’s harsh economic conditions. Of Gibraltar’s 30,000 residents, only 600 (2%) are unemployed. The bordering Spanish city of La Línea de la Concepción is estimated to have 10,000 of its 65,000 inhabitants (15%) out of work. (Credit: Poker News Daily)
